CROCKS BITE BACK IN A GAME OF TWO HALVES
A few hours before kick off I was trying to field 11 players due to work commitments, injury and (as my girlfriend puts it) "man flu" hit the team. A total of 4 players withdrew from the squad, 2 on the morning of the game (Dan Dobson and Anthony Agbo) but we still had 11 men for the tough game ahead.
Both Crockenhill and Sutton players and team members paid their respects before the game to all the fallen soldiers, and to all those who have fought, and are still fighting, for our country, by holding a minute's silence before kick off.
Back to the game...
Sutton Reserves arrived at Wested lane with an unbeaten league record but went away empty handed after coming up against a resolute Crockenhill side who’s never say die attitude earned them 3 valuable points which moved them up to 5th in the league, on a cold afternoon and fielding a bare 11 players It was Sutton who attacked the Crocks goal from the start creating chance after chance but the Crocks defence held firm remembering that only a few weeks ago they dumped Crockenhill out of the cup 5-2, there was never going to be a repeat of that result on Saturday as a solid looking formation of 3-5-2 dealt with everything that Sutton could throw at them and when the defence was breached young Josh in goal was on hand to sweep up the crumbs, at the other end a couple of half chances for Pat and JP. The half drew to a close with the score 0-0
Second half...
Following a rousing team talk at half time by manager JP, the young crocks lead by veteran PG started the second half on the front foot with a number of chances being created with just the odd break-away from the visitors, the Crocks midfield were beginning to get on top and with the inspirational Marc Denham breaking up the play on numerous occasions and allowing the playmakers Ryan and Reece to take control and move the team forward the deadlock was broken in the 55 minute from a great cross from the right (Paul) which fell to JP, who turn volleyed it towards the Sutton goal, but it hit the hand of a Sutton defender and deflected to Reece who managed to turn and lay it back to JP and from 10 yards out he found the bottom left corner to make the score 1-0 to the Crocks!
Just 15 minutes later we saw some great work from Reece again who got the ball to Ryan, who then put Pat away down the left wing he managed to swing a delightful ball to the back post to where JP was standing who managed to head the ball across the face of the goal line to Mark and Filkins, who made the 35 yard run into the box. Filkins made no mistake and smashed the ball into the empty net...2-0 to the Crocks!
We saw the last 10-15 minutes of the game out with not much danger on the home goal.
Well-done lads...!!!
